Additional Inheritance - Chap 90
Chapter 90
Wen Xiaohui opened his eyes gradually. His head felt so sore like it was about to explode, and his eyeballs were also swollen. He didn’t have any strength left in his body.
He searched his memories for the reason, and it came flooding back to him – he’d been in a car crash, but based on his previous experience, he felt it was a deliberate attempt and not an accident. Back then, Li Shuo hired someone to snatch him from Luo Yi in a similar set-up. However, it was only a graze in comparison to this.
Taking a deep breath, he knew that he was in a very dangerous situation and tried not to think too much. He’d been in a car accident, but instead of being in hospital, he was at some unknown location. Chang Xing must have been involved. He looked at the crude wood-panelled ceiling as he tried to identify the sounds outside, concluding that there must be water nearby.
He braced himself for the throbbing pain all over his body, propping himself up to find that he’d been dumped on a dirty-looking single bed. He looked around at the room, which couldn’t be considered small. There were goods piled up in one half, and it looked like a warehouse. The warehouse manager must have been the one to prepare the daily necessities for him, but based on the level of dust on the furniture, it looked as though the warehouse hadn’t been used in a long time.
Where the heck was this place?
As soon as he started thinking about these problems, Wen Xiaohui was hit with a splitting headache and touched his head carefully. It was okay. Except for the gauze on the left hand side of his head, it didn’t seem as if he’d been stuck with anything sharp or heavy, nor was he covered in blood. The headache must have been a side effect of his concussion. All his arms and legs were intact. He’d sustained more injuries in these few years than in the past 20 years, and he hoped he’d be able to pull through.
He gritted his teeth as he dragged himself up off the floor and walked to the door. To no one’s surprise, the door was locked from the outside. He banged on the door weakly. “Is anybody there? Come on!” Since they hadn’t murdered him yet, they must not have intended to starve him to death.
After shouting for a long time, Wen Xiaohui finally heard the sound of footsteps. A husky male voice came from outside. “What are you up to?”
“I’m hungry. I also want to go to the toilet.”
The man left. After some time, Wen Xiaohui heard the sound of the key turning – someone unlocking the door. He never expected that there would be a dog flap at the bottom of the pitch-black door. A tray was pushed through with a burger and a bottle of mineral water on it. The man added, “Piss and shit in your room.”
“Why have you locked me up?” He hadn’t even finished speaking by the time the man locked the door and turned to leave. He was planning to ignore Wen Xiaohui. Wen Xiaohui quickly dropped to the floor in an attempt to find out where he was, but he only managed a glimpse before the dog flap was locked. But he’d seen enough – a row of dilapidated shipping containers. He was at a port. Looking at his watch, he’d been unconscious for seven hours if it was still the day his mum departed, and there were three to five ports within that seven-hour radius. The closest were Tianjin and Qinhuangdao.
Wen Xiaohui grabbed the burger and water, sat back down on the bed and started to chew mechanically.
He ate it without savouring the taste.
What was Chang Xing planning to do with him? Was he going to use him to threaten or seek revenge on Luo Yi? Perhaps it was both. No matter what, he didn’t think he’d be able to get away with just a broken nasal bone this time. He wasn’t sure if Luo Yi had left him with means of escape, he could be in a dire situation.
For some reason, he wasn’t actually frightened. Perhaps it was because he’d been worrying so long that this day would come, reaching the point where he’d started to feel impatient. With the mentality that it was better to get over the pain than to prolong the agony, he thought it was better to die quickly. Being with Luo Yi, he was mentally prepared and had grown indifferent to fear. Luckily, both his mum and Luo Rui were out of the country, and as long as they remained safe, he would resign himself to his fate.
Thinking about how Luo Yi had ruined his whole life and how his life might be cut short because of him, he found the situation ridiculous. His ancestors must have dug up Luo Yi’s ancestral grave and slaughtered his whole family.
He couldn’t even get angry any more. In this quiet, damp, and shabby storage depot, not a sound could be heard and his mind went blank.
After he finished eating, he felt dazed and returned to sleep, waking up several times due to the pain. Finally, he could no longer tell whether it was day or night. He imagined himself with a brain haemorrhage where he might pass away in his sleep. It would be considered a relief.
Unfortunately, the heavens did not grant his wish, and he was rudely awakened by someone.
A hand reeking of cigarettes tapped him on the face. “Hey, wake up!”
Wen Xiaohui opened his eyes to see that it was the man who brought him food. He asked, “What are you doing?” His throat was dry, and his voice was hoarse.
“Get up and eat some food. Try not to starve to death.”
“How long have I been asleep?”
“Almost two days.”
Wen Xiaohui initially intended to starve himself, but his hunger pangs were unbearable when he awoke, so he sat up. He gave the man a sidelong glance. “Who are you? Why are you keeping me here? What are you doing?”
“I’m only in charge of keeping an eye on you and making sure you’re still alive. I haven’t a clue about anything else. Hurry up and eat. Take some medicine once you’re done.”
After some consideration, Wen Xiaohui decided he didn’t want to die of starvation and picked up the burger to take a bite. “Can we have more variety like spicy chicken legs?”
“Fuck, why are you so demanding! Just eat it!”
The man watched Wen Xiaohui until he finished dinner and took his medicine; then, he tidied up and left.
While Wen Xiaohui was eating, he was secretly observing – there wasn’t just one person watching over him, there was another person by the door. Even if he were in peak form, he might not have been able to overpower that stocky man, and now, in his weakened state, he didn’t even have to think about it. He asked, “How long do I have to stay here?”
“I already told you that I don’t know.”
“At least tell me the date.”
The man looked at him. “17th.”
“Am I in Tianjin or Qinhuangdao?”
The man gave him a frosty look, and left after picking up his stuff.
Wen Xiaohui found that the man’s lips were tightly sealed; he wouldn’t speak to him unless it was necessary. He’d only gathered two useful pieces of information. Number one: he was still useful to Chang Xing, and they would keep him alive for the time being. Number two: it had been three days since he’d been kidnapped.
Waking up after the medicine, the pain in Wen Xiaohui’s body was somewhat alleviated. His head no longer felt ready to explode. Finally, he was more clear headed and calm as he started to think about his situation and how to save himself.
He ransacked the warehouse, including the items piled up inside, which turned out to be a batch of nylon canvas bags. In addition, there wasn’t anything that could be used as a tool – clearly, they’d already been tidied away.
Stacking the nylon canvas bags, he climbed up high to look through the air vent and finally looked outside. They were at the edge of a newly constructed port. The warehouse must have been abandoned because it was too far away. He could make out the cranes that were still in operation, but he couldn’t read the words on the shipping containers, and he still didn’t know where he was.
In reality, it didn’t matter if he knew where he was, but it was crucial knowledge for Luo Yi.
Waiting from dawn to dusk, Wen Xiaohui finally heard footsteps coming from the quiet corridor. With a pounding heart, he suddenly stood up. This time, it wasn’t just one or two people, there were loads of people. Could it possibly be Chang Xing?
Someone opened the locked door. The person in charge was tall and calm, wearing a black windbreaker jacket. His expression was grave.
It was Chang Xing!
Chang Xing looked like he’d dropped a size compared to last time, and his cheeks looked a little hollow – his facial features looked sharper, and he seemed more oppressive. The look he gave Wen Xiaohui was like a falcon observing his prey.
Wen Xiaohui gulped: he was frozen with fear the instant he saw Chang Xing again.
Chang Xing took a cigarette from his pocket and brought it to his lips. The person behind him quickly lit it for him. He took a puff, then looked Wen Xiaohui up and down. “You don’t seem to be doing too well.”
Wen Xiaohui nodded. “Isn’t it your fault?”
Chang Xing also nodded. “But it’s ultimately Luo Yi’s fault.”
Wen Xiaohui couldn’t disagree, but he wasn’t here to seek approval. He asked, “Mr Chang, what do you want to do with me? Please just tell me directly, I want to be prepared.”
“That depends on Luo Yi.”
“What are you going to force him to do?”
“I want to go abroad, and I need him to do something for me. Furthermore, he’s responsible for destroying the foundation I built over the years, so how could I let him off without any consequences?” Chang Xing narrowed his eyes. “If a child is disobedient, you need to teach him a lesson that will last a lifetime.”
Wen Xiaohui gave him a strained look and subconsciously clenched his fists.
“I came to talk to you about something. If you’re willing to cooperate, I promise to keep you alive, but if you won’t cooperate…” Chang Xing smiled. “Out of the two of you, one of you has to remain here. Who do you think he’ll choose?”
Through clenched teeth, Wen Xiaohui asked, “What do you want me to do?”
“Ring Luo Yi and say what I tell you to say.”
Wen Xiaohui shook his head, then lowered it. His head nearly dipped as low as his chest.
Did Chang Xing really want to kill Luo Yi or did he want to kill Wen Xiaohui to make Luo Yi suffer? He didn’t want to die, but he also didn’t want to play the role of accomplice to Luo Yi’s murder. Chang Xing was a terrifying monster – he was even more ruthless than Luo Yi.
Chang Xing laughed in spite of himself. “Do you still have feelings for him? Look at yourself, who is responsible for this? Who was responsible for you having to hide for two years and not being able to return home? Don’t you want to be truly free of him?”
Wen Xiaohui looked up, glaring at him. “Are you really going to kill your own son?”
Chang Xing puffed a ring of smoke. “Only one of us should survive.”
Only one of us should survive.
Luo Yi once said something similar, it was no wonder they were father and son.
Luo Yi’s face appeared in Wen Xiaohui’s mind, then he thought of his mum and Luo Rui. He realised he would rather die than make such a decision.
