Additional Inheritance - Chap 98
Chapter 98
After receiving vitamin injections for two days, Wen Xiaohui finally left the hospital. Over the past two years, he had been hospitalised more frequently than in the previous 20 years combined. He couldn’t have been more cursed.
Wen Xiaohui made up his mind to begin exercising after being discharged from hospital, because his body had never been so weak in his life. Every day, he felt as though his head was spinning and he didn’t have any energy. Even going downstairs to throw out the rubbish left him gasping for breath, and he couldn’t eat or sleep well either – he was going to be in serious trouble if he continued like this. Through his mum’s expression each day, he could tell how bad his body’s condition was, and he didn’t want to worry his mum.
Feng Yuehua was delighted when she heard that he wanted to exercise and immediately signed up for two gym memberships. She told him she would go training with him every day. Clearly, she was concerned about her son leaving her sight.
Wen Xiaohui tried to persevere with his daily exercises, early bedtimes, increasing his food consumption, and taking his medicine on time. It was like how he exercised like crazy when he first arrived in Pengcheng. A person’s imagination was less likely to run wild if they were tired, and he discovered this approach wasn’t bad at all.
After returning from the gym one day, Wen Xiaohui had taken a shower and was lying on the bed feeling exhausted. His brain was muddled, and he couldn’t remember what he’d been doing during this period of time. What had he been doing? Eating, sleeping, and exercising. And what else? That was all. He couldn’t think of anything – there wasn’t anything worth committing to memory. The only thing that kept running through his head was that time in the park.
His mobile phone started to ring. Wen Xiaohui took out his new mobile phone, answering the call. “Hello?”
“Hello, is this Mr Wen?”
“Yes, who is this?”
“I’m a staff member of X Mountain Park first aid station.”
Wen Xiaohui was surprised. “Yes, hi…”
“While we were cleaning this morning, we found a power bank with the initials WXH. After looking through our records, your name was the closest match.”
“Oh, it’s mine.”
“Please feel free to collect it when you have time.”
“Okay, thanks.”
As the other party was about to hang up, Wen Xiaohui suddenly thought of something and interjected, “Wait.”
“What’s wrong?”
“My mum mentioned that someone brought me to the first aid station that day. What was he like?”
“I’m not sure, I wasn’t on duty.”
“Could you please ask around for me?”
“Please wait.”
Wen Xiaohui subconsciously sat upright as his fingers dug into the table.
After some time, an older man answered, “Hello, are you the visitor who fainted that day?”
“Yes, I want to find out who brought me to the first aid station, so I can thank them.”
“He was a pretty young gentleman. I couldn’t see his face properly because he was wearing sunglasses, and he didn’t leave any contact details either.”
Wen Xiaohui felt as though he’d been struck in the heart. He changed his approach, voice trembling. “W-what did the young man look like? How tall was he? What kind of hairstyle did he have? What about skin tone? What did he sound like? Were his lips a little…”
“Sir –” interrupted the man. “Do you mind asking your questions one at a time? Lots of stuff happens every day, how can I remember so clearly?”
“Oh.” Wen Xiaohui placed his finger by his lips and bit down on it, forcing himself to calm down. “How tall was he roughly?”
“It’s hard to say, but he was really tall.”
“Did he have any distinguishing features?”
“I didn’t really notice. He was wearing a black trench coat and a pair of sunglasses. He’s probably quite good-looking, his skin is fair.”
Wen Xiaohui felt as though he was unable to breathe. He stuttered, “Was there anything else? Did he have any other distinguishing features?”
The other party became impatient. “Sir, I really don’t remember. Please come and collect your belongings when you have time.” He hung up after he finished speaking.
Wen Xiaohui flung his mobile phone onto the bed, then rolled around the bed a couple of times while cradling his head. He rolled over, jumped to his feet and grabbed his coat before dashing outside.
Feng Yuehua was talking to Ian on an international call when she saw him rush out. She was stunned. “What’s the matter?”
“Mum, I left my power bank at the first aid station in the park. I’m off to pick it up.”
“Forget it, it’s only a power bank.”
“It’s a customised limited edition. It’s super expensive.”
“You splashed out on… Let’s not talk about this now. You don’t have to go there, you can ask them to courier it to you.”
Wen Xiaohui was momentarily speechless. “I’ve already told you that the staff at the first aid station were really impatient. They’re busy and asked me to pick it up myself.”
“Really? I’ll go with you.”
“It’s fine, Mum. I’ll be okay by myself. I’m not driving, so don’t worry.”
Feng Yuehua shook her head. “No, I should go with you.” She said a few quick words to Ian and hung up.
Wen Xiaohui was left with no choice but to leave with his mum.
———————————————–
X Mountain Park was situated 40 kilometres from the city. First, they took the metro and then a taxi, arriving just before the staff at the park left work.
“Mum, it doesn’t smell very pleasant in the first aid station, you should wait for me outside. I’ll be out as soon as I get it.”
“Okay.”
When Wen Xiaohui went inside the first aid station, it was nearly home time. Only two members of staff remained, and they were mopping the floor.
They looked up, and the older man shouted, “Were you in such a rush to come over? I was going to give you a call later and ask for your address to post it back to you.”
Wen Xiaohui had nearly forgotten about the power bank. He asked nervously, “Could you please try and recall the distinguishing features of the man who brought me here that day? It’s really important.”
“Huh? Did he attack you?”
“No, could you please tell me as much as you can remember?” Wen Xiaohui glanced at the man’s mop and snatched it off him. “Tell me, and I’ll mop the floor for you.”
“No, there’s no need for that.” The man snatched the mop back. “Okay, I’ll try to remember.” He frowned as he took a moment to think. “I was on duty that day around 3pm in the afternoon when a man came inside, carrying you in his arms. We examined you, and it didn’t seem like anything serious. You have a delicate constitution, so we recommended that you rest on the bed and asked him to complete the registration. He refused and told us to make an announcement. There wasn’t anything on you, so it was obvious that you’d come with friends, and your mum appeared once we made the announcement. That’s what happened.”
Wen Xiaohui’s heart was pounding. “What did he look like?”
“Didn’t I already tell you? He was wearing a black trench coat and dressed entirely in black. He was also wearing a pair of oversized sunglasses, which made his skin look even more pale. His body smelled like disinfectant. He was tall and slender and looked fairly young.” He suddenly recalled something. “Oh, when he reached out, I saw that he had a bandage around his wrist.”
“Can we look at the park’s CCTV? Is there CCTV here?”
The man looked at him warily. “Why do you need to watch the CCTV recording? We can’t let people watch it willy-nilly.”
“What do I need to do to watch it?”
“There’s no CCTV inside the first aid station, but there is one outside. Without police authorisation, we can’t let tourists view the recording.”
“H-he attacked me.” Wen Xiaohui nearly bit his own tongue. “Isn’t that a good enough reason?”
The man glanced at Wen Xiaohui warily. “What are you trying to do? You should file a report with the police if he attacked you, there’s no point talking to me. I should remind you that you need to accept the legal repercussions if you lie to them.”
Wen Xiaohui let out a sigh and whacked himself on the forehead. He looked very dejected.
Shaking his head, the man handed the power bank back to him. “Your item.”
Wen Xiaohui took the power bank. Luo Yi had bought it for him, and his vision blurred as he stared at it.
Feng Yuehua appeared at that moment. “Xiaohui, what’s taking so long?”
“Nothing.” Wen Xiaohui had his back to her as he rubbed his eyes, waving the power bank he was holding. “I’ve got it, let’s go.”
The two of them hadn’t walked far from the first aid station when a young girl came running out and shouted at them.
Wen Xiaohui looked at her with suspicion.
The girl gasped for breath and said, “I was around that day and remembered something.”
Wen Xiaohui’s eyes widened. “Tell me.”
“The man was wearing what looked like a hospital gown under his black trench coat. I saw it when he stretched his arm and recognised the gown. It’s from XX Hospital. I had an internship at the hospital while I was at university.”
Wen Xiaohui grabbed her by the shoulders and rambled, “Thank you! Thanks!”
The girl seemed stunned.
Feng Yuehua didn’t understand what was happening. “What’s going on, Xiaohui?”
Wen Xiaohui stayed as calm as he could. “Nothing. I just want to thank the man who brought me here that day. We can just forget about it if we can’t find him.”
“He didn’t leave any contact details either.”
———————————————-
It was already dark by the time they returned home. Wen Xiaohui shut himself in his bedroom, so that he could reflect on the information he’d gathered today. He’d received more information that called into question Luo Yi’s death, and it couldn’t have been his overactive imagination or the fact that he was thinking too much about it. He couldn’t suppress his thoughts any more. He wouldn’t feel at ease until he sought out the truth. Having reached this stage, he didn’t know if giving up now or his inability to let go was worse.
He kept his eyes wide open until daybreak. Without a word, Wen Xiaohui left for XX Hospital and arrived at the front desk. He inquired after both Luo Yi and Cao Hai, but neither could be found. He wanted to search by date of entry, but the nurse drove him away. After standing in daze at the front desk for a few seconds, he decided he was going to look by himself. There were 26 floors and numerous wards. He started searching ward by ward, from the crack of dawn until the sun was at its brightest in the sky, and he continued until sunset. He’d only drank two bottles of water all day. His search was ultimately unsuccessful.
Leaving the hospital crestfallen, he took his mobile phone out and called a number that he thought he would never call again.
“Hello, Xiaohui?”
“Mr Cao.” Wen Xiaohui’s voice was weak and lacked liveliness.
Cao Hai seemed stunned. “Do you need something from me?”
Wen Xiaohui pursed his lips and replied quietly, “The policeman told me that they haven’t found Luo Yi and Chang Xing’s bodies to date.”
“Yes, there are eddies in that part of the waters. It’s likely that they were both swept away.”
“Then how did they manage to recover the bodies of the others? Only their bodies are missing.”
“It’s just a coincidence. They’ve only partially-recovered some of those bodies…” Cao Hai sounded a little irritated, like he wanted to end the conversation.
Wen Xiaohui remained quiet briefly. “I’m at XX Hospital at the moment.”
Cao Hai paused his breathing, which Wen Xiaohui noticed due to his perceptiveness. He said hurriedly, “What’s wrong? Are you familiar with this hospital?”
“Kind of, it’s not far from my house.”
Wen Xiaohui gripped his phone tightly. “I fainted in the park the other day, and someone brought me to the first aid station while I was still unconscious. The staff in the first aid station said that the person was young, tall and slim, with very pale skin. But he…”
“Wen Xiaohui.” Cao Hai interrupted in a calm voice, “What are you trying to say?”
Wen Xiaohui paused. After a long time, he asked in a guarded but very accusatory way, “Is Luo Yi still alive?”
