The enormous diamond in the woman’s hand reflected a dazzling and sharp light, much like the demeanor of its owner at that moment.
Even with the embellishment of gorgeous jewelry, the hand holding the ladle and stirring the coffee clearly showed that she was not young.
“I have a meeting in half an hour, so you only have 10 minutes.”
The woman’s gaze remained fixed on the documents beside her, without even lifting her eyelids.
The obvious disrespect made Lu Zhen, sitting opposite him, blush. He instinctively looked at the man beside him, seeking protection.
The man in Lu Zhen’s eyes wore a black turtleneck cashmere sweater and a dark brown cashmere overcoat, his pupils appearing a faint amber color in the warm light. His demeanor was difficult to discern; at first glance, he appeared composed and mature, but upon closer inspection, one could sense a profound gentleness, or perhaps a subtle, almost imperceptible, quiet solitude.
Faced with the woman’s disdain, the man remained calm and composed, his voice steady and sincere amidst the tense atmosphere: “I brought Lu Zhen here to apologize to President Shi.”
The woman scoffed softly, slowly raising her eyes. Her gaze swept over Lu Zhen briefly before shifting away. She took a small sip of coffee, leaving a trail of her vibrant lipstick on the rim of the cup.
“Why should I apologize? Love between men and women is based on attraction. If Xiao Lu doesn’t like me, I can’t force him.” She sneered. “That’s true. At my age, I could easily have given birth to him with a little effort.”
These words were sarcastic and conveyed extreme displeasure, indicating a complete lack of acceptance.
The composed man lowered his eyes, glancing at Lu Zhen through his narrow eye sockets, his expression turning cold: “Lu Zhen, apologize to President Shi now.”
Lu Zhen hurriedly agreed and poured out all the words that had been swirling in his mind.
Before the woman could launch into further accusations, the man beside Lu Zhen tapped the table with his knuckles and said coldly, “Lu Zhen, if you’re going to apologize, show some sincerity. Is President Shi wasting his time listening to your nonsense?”
Lu Zhen was taken aback, and it took him a few breaths to react. He got up and moved to the woman’s side, then suddenly bowed deeply to her: “President Shi, I was wrong. I went to the appointment without understanding the situation. Please forgive me.”
The woman turned a page of the document and slightly raised the corner of her lips: “Why does it seem like I’m the only bad guy in the whole group?”
“If I were you, I certainly wouldn’t have let Lu Zhen leave the club unscathed yesterday, nor would I have taken time out of my busy schedule to see him today just because he waited all day.” The man said with a smile, “So, Mr. Shi, you really don’t deserve the title of villain.”
The woman paused for a moment while stirring her coffee, and then she took a serious look at the unfamiliar man sitting opposite her.
She saw a faint smile still lingering in the man’s eyes, yet his voice was authoritative: “Lu Zhen, did I tell you to get up?”
Upon hearing this, Lu Zhen bent his back to ninety degrees again, pressing his hands down on the crease of his pants, like a perfect triangle ruler.
The woman glanced at Lu Zhen, then at the man opposite her, and finally showed some interest: “What, did your company get Lu a new manager?”
The man straightened his back slightly, adopting the posture of a subordinate introducing himself: “President Shi, I am Lu Zhen’s ex-boyfriend, my name is You Shulang.”
This time, it was the woman who was taken aback.
“Ex-boyfriend?!” she exclaimed angrily. “So their company is recommending gay men to me?!”
“Damn it!” Even the refined and elegant woman couldn’t help but swear.
“President Shi, please calm down. It has nothing to do with the company; it’s all Lu Zhen’s fault.” You Shulang calmly reassured him. “He wanted to take on the endorsement and also wanted to build connections, but he didn’t communicate clearly with the company on certain aspects and accepted your advertisement without fully understanding the situation. But he can’t pretend to be straight and deceive you, can he? Yesterday, he backed out at the last minute, and the company was very angry. You can see he still has a red mark on his forehead.”
The woman followed the conversation and looked over, seeing Lu Zhen still bowing at a 90-degree angle. Even though his face was already flushed red, a clear bruise could still be seen on his left temple.
They still have some conscience. There have been rumors in the industry that some gay men would rather take medication and endure the pain to serve their female bosses in order to climb the social ladder.
The woman raised an eyebrow, withdrew her gaze, and her anger subsided considerably.
“Xiao Lu is your… ex-boyfriend?”
“Yes,” You Shulang replied calmly.
“You’d even care if your ex-boyfriend got into trouble?”
You Shulang smiled and said, “This is the last time I’ll get involved with him. Consider it a token of our past friendship. I won’t interfere again.”
Upon hearing this, Lu Zhen, who was struggling to persevere, swayed, and large tears fell straight to the ground without any cushioning.
The woman glanced at the tear stains on the floor and suddenly found her coffee a little bitter. She rummaged through her bag for a cigarette, and just as she put it in her mouth, You Shulang offered her a light.
“Why did you break up with him? He was such a good boyfriend.” She lit a cigarette in anger and asked Lu Zhen.
Lu Zhen’s tears flowed even more, her body trembling, yet she struggled to support her bent back.
The woman scoffed, “Looks like you’re just being ungrateful.” She sighed, “Men, some can’t share hardship, and some can’t share wealth.”
She exhaled a puff of smoke and smiled forlornly: “If I could meet a good man, I wouldn’t be spending my days playing around with male models.”
You Shulang was silent for a while before saying, “Lu Zhen is young and sometimes thinks too idealistically about many things, including relationships and work. I think he will definitely learn from his mistakes after this fall, and I hope that President Shi will be lenient and forgive him this time.”
The woman held a cigarette, wisps of white smoke rising from it. She stared at Lu Zhen, who was barely able to stand, and said calmly, “Not many men can lower themselves for their exes. This time, I’ll give Mr. You some face.”
She stubbed out her cigarette, pulled out an advertising endorsement contract from her briefcase, and signed her name with a pen.
“I won’t change the spokesperson, Lu Zhen. The reason I’m interested in you is because you look somewhat like my ex-husband when we were young. I hope you won’t be as heartless and ruthless as him.”
After signing the contract, the woman stared at You Shulang and smiled, saying, “Mr. You, if you like women, I’ll spend any amount of money to get you.”
Her smile was genuine for the first time, and her face, though not young, still held a touch of innocence. You Shulang returned the smile: “President Shi is a very nice person, and beautiful too. She will meet a good man.”
“Have you encountered it yet?” the woman asked casually.
“I……”
A simple question rendered the calm and composed man speechless, as all the emotions that had been suppressed for a whole day pressed down on You Shulang like a mountain!
The surrounding sounds faded into the distance, and the woman’s concerned gaze slowly dimmed. Only the half-extinguished cigarette in the ashtray, trailing a wisp of smoke, resembled the “Rouge” cigarette in Fan Xiao’s hand last night…
