Le Zhishi stood behind Song Yu, unable to say a word.
During the holidays, he always went with his relatives. Everyone was very enthusiastic about his life and studies. He had never heard such sharp and harsh words. When he heard it, he was not used to it.
After such a long time, Le Zhishi realized that everyone’s friendliness was just a pretense. He was just a parasite in their hearts.
He was so well protected that he really thought of himself as Song Yu’s younger brother, so much so that he completely forgot the fact that he was living under someone else’s roof.
“What outsider?” Big Aunt’s face was full of anger, “Your sister-in-law is also thinking for you. You child, you’re really the same as your father. You like to make a wedding dress for others and raise other people’s children. Could it be that this money came from nowhere? ”
Song Yu calmly replied: “This money came from Uncle Le who took out all his savings and let my father gamble.”
After saying that, he looked at his aunt with a sharp gaze. “Maybe it’s because I’m too young and can’t remember things. I want to ask, when my father started his business and had a cash flow problem, did you help him?”
Big Aunt was immediately speechless, and the expression on her face was not good. In the end, she could only reluctantly say a sentence, “That … at that time, our family’s condition was not good.”
“Hmm.” Song Yu nodded as if he was an interrogator who had gotten the answer he wanted.
“Since you didn’t participate, it has nothing to do with you.”
“You!” Big Aunt stood up angrily. The new cousin-in-law patted her mother-in-law’s back to calm her down. She looked at Song Yu with dissatisfaction, “Cousin, we’re a family. You’re too hurtful to our family …”
Song Yu suddenly laughed. The other party didn’t seem to expect this reaction. She didn’t finish her words and couldn’t continue. But when Le Zhishi looked at Song Yu, the look on his face became colder.
“The word family from your mouth is really cheap.”
This was the first time that Le Zhishi saw such a sharp side of Song Yu. His wrist was grabbed, and his entire body was pulled away from this place.
This was not in line with Le Zhishi’s expectations. He thought that Song Yu would walk ahead on his own like in the past, leaving him to follow behind.
Perhaps she had guessed that he was unable to walk and could not extricate himself from such an embarrassing situation.
They didn’t say a word along the way. Le Zhishi didn’t feel like talking. The apple hadn’t been washed, so it felt especially heavy in his hand. After Song Yu entered the door, he gave the excuse that he had thought of in advance. He told his grandfather that the washroom outside was also under repair and that he could not go in.
Grandpa was engrossed in reading the manga and had no intention of eating the fruit. He did not doubt the authenticity of this lie at all. His reading glasses slid down the bridge of his nose. He raised his hand and beckoned Le Zhishi to his side. “Come over here and watch with me. This is really interesting.”
Le Zhishi nodded and sat by the bed. Then he leaned on the bed and read the manga with his grandfather. If it were in the past, he would have excitedly introduced the personalities and abilities of the various characters to his grandfather, but he couldn’t muster up much interest now. He asked one question after another like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube.
Ten minutes later, his aunt and his new cousin-in-law, who had sat outside for a long time, came in. The two of them acted as if nothing had happened and chatted with the old man with a smile. “Yu is here too. Come have dinner with us tonight. There’s a good restaurant nearby.”
“Your parents will be here later.” His aunt glanced at Le Zhishi. The corners of her mouth were so wide that the flesh on her cheeks bunched up. “Le, right? You should come too. What do you like to eat? How about hotpot? ”
Le Zhishi’s throat seemed to be blocked by something. He looked at his aunt’s face, and his eyelashes trembled slightly.
“He’s not going.” Song Yu’s tone was firm, and even a little cold. “He can’t eat outside food.”
The old man had taken care of Le Zhishi for a while, so he knew about his allergies. “Yes, Le has to be careful when he eats.” He patted Le Zhishi’s head. “When grandpa’s arm recovers, I’ll grill pork ribs for you. Didn’t you love the pork ribs I grilled?”
“Yes.” Le Zhishi looked up and smiled at him.
Most of the time, Le Zhishi couldn’t understand the adult world.
Just like at this very moment, he didn’t understand why they could pretend that nothing had happened when Song Yu tore apart their relationship in private not long ago and made it so ugly. They were still relatives of He Meimei and chatted freely as if there were no grudges between them.
He rested his chin on the pure white blanket on the bed, and his big and beautiful eyes looked at his aunt, who was chatting happily, and his new cousin-in-law, who looked very respectful and gentle. In the end, his eyes were probably sore, so he closed them for a while. When he opened them again, he met Song Yu’s eyes.
Le Zhishi couldn’t describe Song Yu’s expression at that moment. He frowned as if he was sad, but it was more complicated. He tilted his head, but his expression didn’t change. It looked like he was acting coquettishly to Song Yu.
Fortunately, Song Yu was here, protecting him like a suit of armor.
Only then could Le Zhishi naturally hide.
He had always hoped that he was brave and faced any difficulties like the protagonists of all comics, but sometimes, he needed to hide.
“Grandpa.” Song Yu stood up from the sofa. “I’m taking Le home.”
Le Zhishi looked up when he heard that it wasn’t his full name. His eyes were a little surprised.
“You’re going back so early.” Grandpa Ji was a little unhappy. He raised his hand to touch the top of Le Zhishi’s head. “Isn’t Le going to play for a while?”
“I …”
Song Yu lied for the second time without changing his expression. “He still has tutoring classes.” He added, “The middle school exam is coming up.”
Grandpa Ji didn’t force them to stay. He reminded them that their studies were important, and so was their health. He also told them to come and accompany him when they were free.
Le Zhishi only nodded and didn’t say much. He didn’t want to show off too much in front of his aunt, as if he was deliberately showing off his sense of accomplishment.
Of course, Eldest Aunt also said a lot of proper pleasantries and saw them out. She put on a full show until they reached the elevator and didn’t show any signs of harshness.
After leaving the hospital, Le Zhishi realized that she didn’t know that he was around the corner and didn’t know that he had heard everything. Song Yu stopped him and didn’t let him go out. It turned out that he was trying to preserve his last bit of dignity.
In the taxi, Song Yu also didn’t say anything. He seemed to be very unhappy.
Le Zhishi had a strange perception that no one else had. He could see through Song Yu’s mood. It was very difficult because Song Yu’s expression didn’t fluctuate much, and he didn’t speak much. It was the hard mode of emotion recognition, but Le Zhishi could detect it from subtle feelings.
It was probably the atmosphere.
It was early spring in the city, and the spring was especially green. Song Yu’s side profile was reflected in the greenery outside the car window. He looked at the windshield in front of him, but what he thought of was Le Zhishi lying in front of the hospital bed. His face was pale, and his eyes were full of helplessness.
Since he was young, Le Zhishi had never met anyone or anything too complicated. Sometimes, he was so simple that he didn’t fit in with the world. He directly asked questions, expressed, and showed his emotions. But this kind of “directness” was harmless. It was like a furry flame, soft in light and heat.
Song Yu wanted to say something.
He always felt that he should say something.
Le Zhishi squeezed closer to Song Yu. His arm was pressed against his arm, and the back of his hand accidentally brushed against Song Yu’s.
If it was any other time, Song Yu would say, “Why are you so close to me?” Or he would turn his face to look at him. Or he would do nothing and continue to look out of the window.
But this time was different. In Le Zhishi’s eyes, Song Yu, who was very angry, used his hand to cover Le Zhishi’s hand that had accidentally brushed against his. He didn’t say anything, and he didn’t turn his head.
The heat of his palm explained everything.
Suddenly, Le Zhishi thought of cotton candy.
He regretted participating in the winter camp. He wanted to see Song Yu pick up cotton candy with his own eyes. Was it the same? He didn’t say anything and held its paw.
Then, the cotton candy left with him.
After returning home, Le Zhishi did his homework and didn’t finish until 9: 50 pm. He was so tired that he couldn’t be distracted. The two of them had dinner at home. Le Zhishi didn’t eat much, and now he was a little hungry. He wanted to go downstairs to find something to eat. There might not be anything else at home, but there was never a lack of food.
Walking to the kitchen, Le Zhishi opened the fridge and saw the post-it note that Lin Rong had pasted on it. It said, “There are cinnamon rolls in the oven. Heat them up before eating.”
So he gave up on the fridge and walked to the oven. But he was too lazy to heat it up. He opened the door and took out a gluten-free cinnamon roll.
It was actually hot. Brother heated it up?
The icing on the cinnamon roll was very fragrant. Le Zhishi stood by the countertop and ate slowly. Although it was a semi-open kitchen, he was embedded in the corner and was completely hidden by the fridge.
After eating one, Le Zhishi still didn’t have enough. He took out another one. Just as he took a bite, he heard the door open. Lin Rong and Song Jin had returned home.
He was about to come out, but Lin Rong seemed to be very angry. “I’ve been holding it in for a long time. Let me tell you. In the future, if you want to go to your brother’s house, you can go. I’m not going. This meal really pissed me off. ”
Song Jin sounded a little helpless. “Calm down. Look at your red face.”
“That’s blush!” Lin Rong threw her bag on the sofa. “Dad fell and didn’t even go to a better hospital. They even waited for you to send them money before signing the surgery form. What are they up to? Don’t they feel sorry for Dad at all? He’s so old. What’s wrong with falling? It’s really infuriating. ”
“And sister-in-law. Every time I hear her speak, I’m filled with anger. She talks about money as if we owe them millions.”
Song Jin massaged her shoulders. “That’s her temper. Don’t argue with her.”
Le Zhishi didn’t know why he didn’t go out. Perhaps it was because he had experienced something like this during the day. He subconsciously shrank behind the fridge.
“And their new daughter-in-law. What was she saying during the meal …”
Song Yu heard the commotion and came downstairs. He saw that his mother was very angry and didn’t ask much. He didn’t expect a big pot to fall on his head.
“Song Yu!”
Hearing his mother call his name, Song Yu stopped in his tracks. He stood in the middle of the stairs and looked at her.
“Let me tell you. If you find me a daughter-in-law like that, I’ll break your legs.”
Song Yu didn’t express any thoughts about this rare vicious remark and continued to walk down. Lin Rong continued, “Fortunately, they didn’t say it in front of Le. Otherwise, I would have lost my temper in front of him.”
Le Zhishi thought to himself that he had heard most of it.
Her voice lowered again and became a little sad. “I heard them talking about Le and I felt very uncomfortable. What do they mean by being careful of raising an ingrate? Is that something a human would say? After so many years, I’ve long treated him as my own son. Think about it. He’s been with me since he was young. It wasn’t easy for him to grow up to this age. ”
“Isn’t that so?” Song Jin sighed. “Every time he gets sick, you cry.”
“I really don’t feel well today. And when I heard what they said, I thought about what if one day Le grows up and leaves me. I feel terrible when I think about that scene. “After saying that, Lin Rong looked at Song Jin again.” When he was young, he wanted to call me Mommy. I was so happy. “She hit Song Jin a few times.” It’s all your fault. You didn’t let him call you that. ”
Song Jin smiled and grabbed her hand. “You got lucky. You picked up a little baby for free and still forced him to call you Mommy. Did you consider your son’s and Olivia’s feelings?”
Song Yu, who was passing by, looked like he didn’t want to get involved and was about to find some water to drink. Cotton Candy came out of nowhere and wrapped itself around his leg. She jumped around as if she wanted him to hug her.
Lin Rong sighed. “What a pity. Why didn’t Yue Yi give us a daughter? If only Le was a girl. She’s so obedient and pretty. Where can we find such a good girl now? She could just be our daughter-in-law. Wouldn’t she be a hundred times better than the one we had dinner with today?” Lin Rong said to Song Yu jokingly, “Right, Yu?”
Song Yu’s back was facing them. He said coldly, “As long as you’re happy.”
He lazily walked to the fridge, opened the door, and took out a bottle of iced soda water. When he closed the door, he didn’t expect to see Le Zhichi, who was holding half a cinnamon roll, curled up in the corner of the counter, looking at him with a pair of big eyes. She was a little embarrassed and gave him a silly smile.
Song Yu choked violently before he could drink the water.
