Mr. Yuan is Always Unhappy - Chap 22
Edited by Yummers
During the recording of Sparkling Friends’ third episode, Yuan Rui was even more compatible with his new teammates. He had built a basic friendship with the Korean cameraman as well, although neither of them could understand each other. Despite knowing that everyone would be heading to a different place once the show was over, with the big possibility of never contacting each other again, Yuan Rui was still very happy. He was never able to make friends, such a short span of interactions was worthy to be valued.
There was no food competition that day. When noon came around, on their way to the next game’s location, the production team had the guests take care of their own lunches.
Yuan Rui was very hungry, but due to his fear that eating too much might affect his performance, he only bought a piece of bread and a box of milk from the convenience store.
But when he returned to the car, the female guests who rode with him thought the bread that was with overflowing fragrance, was just his dessert; all of them expressed the want to eat it. He didn’t have the heart to reject them, so he could only give them the bread, while he himself only drank the box of milk.
He only realized they were going to play a dwarf basketball game when they arrived at their next set. The guests put on customized ball-shaped dwarf costumes to play the game, and they had to keep squatting inside the ball. If their ankles were shown, that would count as a foul.
Yuan Rui was very troubled. This kind of activity would be great for short legs.
He got the costume on, bent his legs, and had to jump to steal the ball away, then also shoot it. Not only was it exhaustingly suffocating, the ache from his knees constantly jabbing at his abdomen became worse and worse.
Finally, the referee blew his whistle, the game was over.
Everyone was drained. They all stood up to stretch out their limbs as they complained half-jokingly and half-seriously about how inhumane the production team was.
But Yuan Rui fell to the ground with a thud noise. His long legs stretched out from the sphere ball costume, it was quite a silly sight.
Zhao Zhengyi ran over. With a ka-cha sound, he snapped a picture, then said, “Yuan-Ge, are you alright? Have a Red Bull to restock some energy. I can also take another picture for you to post on Weibo. Your fans will definitely pity you and the sponsor would be happy.”
Yuan Rui agreed with a simple “mn”, then used all his strength to stand back up. Zhao Zhengyi passed him the Red Bull, but after he took it, he kept holding onto it with a dull expression.
Zhao Zhengyi questioned, “Yuan-Ge? Drink it.”
Yuan Rui vomited milk onto the ground.
He didn’t know if the sponsor was happy or not, but he knew that his math teacher wasn’t happy.
“Director Yang, I’m sorry, I wasted everyone’s time.” He had his head lowered as he apologized sincerely. “I’ve gotten enough rest, I can get back to shooting right away.”
Yang Lu stood before him with crossed arms. Her expression wasn’t a pleased one. “You’re already a grown adult, do you still need to be taught how to eat properly? There was clearly enough free time for you guys to eat during noon, yet you didn’t. Now you’re just going to say a ‘sorry’ for the trouble you’ve caused and be done with it? Do you know how much it costs me per minute to hire those foreign aids from Korea?”
Yuan Rui thought, Isn’t their pay based on episodes? Why are we counting minutes?
Yang Lu continued, “I know that you models have to keep your figure slim. But you aren’t a full-time model right now, get rid of those unnecessary eating habits that can affect your job. Plus, is being this skinny really that attractive?”
Yuan Rui thought, Of course, my boyfriend said so.
Yang Lu was still going on, “You weren’t bright to start with. Instead of putting more effort to make up for what you lack, you wait for others to nag you before you start working hard. I’ll let it go this time, don’t let this kind of accident happen during a recording again. To have it out there that you vomited milk, isn’t that laughable?”
Yuan Rui thought, If it weren’t for the female guests that ate my bread, I’d definitely be able to puke more nutritiously.
Yang Lu added on crankily, “Why are your eyes rolling all over the place? Are you not happy with my words? Listen, even if I wasn’t your leader right now, I still ought to give you some lecturing just based on seniority.”
Yuan Rui quickly replied, “Mrs. Wang, you’re very right.”
“……My surname is Yang.”
His math teacher was Mrs. Wang.
When he finished the job at the end of the day after all the bumps, it was already dark. He gave Zheng Qiuyang a call. “Let’s eat out tonight. I don’t want to cook, I’m kind of tired.”
“Okay, what do you want to eat?”
“Let’s eat steak, the one I make isn’t as good as the restaurant ones.”
“Alright, where are you right now?”
“In the gymnasium, it’s not very far from your company. Do you have the time to pick me up? It’d be quite touchy to have Xiao Zhao drop me off at the restaurant then have him go home.”
Zhao Zhengyi had just finished putting away stuff for the cute girls from the production team and heard Yuan Rui’s words. He stood on the side in silence, not making any noise. Sometimes he really couldn’t understand if Yuan Rui was actually dumb or not. He often showed a lower than average EQ, but would also pay extra attention to the little details that many wouldn’t think about. Ever since his graduation, he’d been an assistant for numerous celebrities for five years. In total, he’s worked for 9 people. Yuan Rui was the only one who cared for him like this.
Shortly, Zheng Qiuyang came over to pick up Yuan Rui. The two headed to the western restaurant together.
Yuan Rui spoked dejectedly, “I vomited milk halfway through the show’s recording today.”
Yuan Rui didn’t get it as he replied, “My mouth, duh.”
Zheng Qiuyang saw that his dirty joke didn’t get through him so he could only ask, “What happened? Did the production make you guys chug milk again? When they did that with lemon juice the last time, you couldn’t eat properly for days because of the stomachache. They sure know how to make you guys suffer.”
“It wasn’t the production team’s fault.” Then, he explained the situation.
Zheng Qiuyang spoke disappointedly, “Don’t always give others whatever just because they ask. If this happens again, just tell them that you haven’t eaten and can’t give them the bread. Isn’t that all good then?”
“But they already asked, it’s not something very expensive either…”
Zheng Qiuyang gave him a lesson, “What do you mean ‘very expensive’ stuff? If it’s something you need, then it’s valuable. Don’t give it to other people.”
Zheng Qiuyang continued the lecture, “Then think about it. If someone asks you for the one thing that you need the most, would you give it to them?”
Yuan Rui thought for a moment then said, “No.”
Zheng Qiuyang was happy. “That’s right. Don’t always be so generous. What were you thinking of just now? The mopping robot? Or your stack of Conan comics?”
“Nither.” Yuan Rui was too shy to say it, “I’m not telling you.”
Zheng Qiuyang thought about it, he said with an annoyed tone, “Bai Tu’s signature, right?”
Yuan Rui thought inside, The one I need the most is clearly you. But he felt that it was too cheesy and didn’t want to say it. He changed the topic, “Drop me off at the door before you go look for a parking spot later. I’ll go in and order first, they’re very slow because of how busy they can get.”
He went into the restaurant first as Zheng Qiuyang went to look for a parking spot.
The waiter recognized Yuan Rui and took him to an empty table very hospitably. As he placed down the menu before him, he thought about asking for his signature when the manager wasn’t paying attention.
Yuan Rui flipped through the menu. “Two ribeyes, one with peppercorn sauce and the other with mushroom sauce.” Zheng Qiuyang couldn’t take even a bit of spice.
“One piece of cheesecake, one shrimp and asparagus salad, two ice cream balls, one cabernet, and one grape juice.” Since Zheng Qiuyang was driving, he couldn’t drink any alcohol either.
The waiter complied, “Alright. Would you like to try out our new dish?”
But Yuan Rui asked an unrelated question, “It’s the total at least 300 now?”
The waiter was caught off guard. After a quick calculation, he stated, “Your total would be 301 yuan.”
Yuan Rui asked again, “Can I pay with Meituan today?”
“……Yes, this option is only available on legal holidays.”
Yuan Rui passed the menu back to him. “That’s all then, thank you.”
The waiter left in a disorder, even forgetting his signature. Their restaurant had special deals when customers paid with Meituan, if their total reached 300, they would get 30 yuan off.
