Sunday morning, Feng Dongyuan called Bai Xinyu and said, “Xinyu, you’re going to see Fengcheng today, aren’t you? Do you want me to go with you?”
Bai Xinyu was silent for a moment and said, “No, I won’t go.”
“Uh, okay.”
“School starts in a week, are you all set?”
Feng Dongyuan said excitedly: “I’ve reported to school early, I’ll be moving to my dorm in a couple of days. It’s like a month of military training first, ha ha, when I was in Korla I trained others, now they’re training me.”
Bai Xinyu laughed: “You’ll get to experience military life a bit more, how nice.”
“Heh heh, yeah.”
They chatted a bit and hung up. Bai Xinyu felt a little guilty thinking that Yu Fengcheng was probably waiting for him to visit him but he hadn’t planned to go, he just couldn’t refuse in front of all those people that day. His mind was in a muddle, if he had seen Yu Fengcheng, the muddle would have solidified.
Monday morning, he went to work as usual, just as he turned into the underground car park, he saw a tall man standing in his regular parking space, wearing a duck cap, on crutches, his heart thudded, on closer inspection, it was Yu Fengcheng. A series of expletives burst from his mind, a wave of anger washed over him, he made a sharp turn and drifted into the space.
The turn was very sharp, Bai Xinyu had been racing sports cars since he was 14 years old, he was not an expert but he was absolutely confident of the turn but to an outsider, especially one standing at the corner, the angle looked like a car was about to run over him, an absolute heart attack. Bai Xinyu was holding his breath when he did this, he regretted it as soon as he took the wheel, he didn’t need to scare a cripple but there was no way to stop now, it was too late to brake, he would have hit Yu Fengcheng if he hadn’t taken the corner, to his surprise Yu Fengcheng just looked up at him He didn’t move at all.
The tyres screech against the ground, Bai Xinyu slams on the brakes and stops firmly in the parking space, he reckons the front of the car is no more than five centimetres from the wall.
It was rush hour, many people were startled by the hand drift and the sharp braking and looked at them.
Bai Xinyu got out of the car, looked at Yu Fengcheng and said in a vicious voice: “You didn’t even dodge? Aren’t you afraid I’ll run you over?”
“I think you can turn around this curve.” Yu Fengcheng shrugged saying, “Besides, if you hit me, you’ll be responsible for the rest of your life, why should I hide.”
Bai Xinyu frowned deeply, “What are you doing here.”
“I said I’d visit yesterday, you didn’t come.” Yu Fengcheng said justifiably: “So, I came to see you.”
“I didn’t go because I didn’t want to see you.”
“I know, that’s why I came uninvited.” Yu Fengcheng curled his lips into a smile, his dark eyes glowed with a radiant light, “I’m chasing you again, I can’t run fast now but I won’t be left behind.”
Bai Xinyu said sarcastically: “Again? Have you ever chased me before?”
“Yes, but in a rough way.” Yu Fengcheng’s deep eyes darted over his face, catching all the subtleties of his expression.
Bai Xinyu thinks back to when they first met, if he hadn’t met Yu Fengcheng, he would never have known that he could be a shy person. He didn’t want to remember any more, he picked up his briefcase and said, “I’m going to work.”
