Seeing Calgar, Chu Feng grabbed a towel from the rack and wiped the water from his face, “Sorry, Your Excellency, I was just washing up and the terminal wasn’t around.”
Calgar sat behind a large conference table and frowned, “Isn’t it too late for getting up?”
Chu Feng replied, “I had the day off, so I stayed up a little late watching a movie.”
“It’s not good for your health to change your regular schedule, don’t go to bed too late or too early in the morning.” Calgar said in a long-winded tone.
“I understand, I will correct it.”
“Good, as long as you understand.” Calgar nodded and added, “Chu Feng, you should pack up, a car will pick you up in two hours, then you’ll take a special flight to the border.”
“The border?” Chu Feng asked.
Calgar sighed and said, “Last night, the Alliance Army and the Olin Truth Church exchanged gunfire and two civilians were killed by mistake in the battle. Now, things are starting to ferment and boil all over the place, you have to deal with it.”
Chu Feng didn’t reply after hearing this, squeezing the towel in his hand in silence.
“What’s wrong? Is there a reason preventing you from going?” Calgar leaned forward, staring Chu Feng in the eyes.
Chu Feng frowned, but then replied, “No, I’m trying to figure out where to start if I were to handle this.”
Calgar leaned back in his chair, nudged his finger at him in the air, and said, “You’re still a little short on independence and lack practical experience. Willson has handled several similar cases, you can ask him if you don’t understand something. The two of you are my right hand men, don’t be so distant, contact each other more. Won’t your relationship become closer that way?”
“I will complete the task independently, please don’t worry, Your Excellency.” Chu Feng looked straight ahead as he replied.
Calgar shook his head helplessly and said, “You two… are really making my head hurt.” Seeing that Chu Feng still looked unmoved, he added, “You have to find the families of the deceased first and start with them. Do you understand?”
Chu Feng leaned back on his feet and loudly exclaimed, “I understand.”
“Then you go and prepare.”
“Yes, sir.”
After Calgar hung up the call, Chu Feng propped his hand on the sink and thought for a moment before returning to the living room, sitting down and dialing on his terminal. When the terminal was connected, a three-dimensional image of Chen SiHan appeared in the room, looking like he had just woken up and was still in his pajamas.
“Hey, SiHan.”
Chen SiHan tsk ed and said, “Can we just talk on the phone? Every time, the video pops up out of nowhere, not caring if the person is inconvenienced—”
“I need your help with something,” Chu Feng interrupted him.
When Chen SiHan saw that he was serious, he also restrained his joking expression and replied, “Go ahead.”
“Something happened to Luo Pei,” Chu Feng said.
Chen SiHan asked in shock, “What happened to him? I haven’t heard anything.”
Chu Feng mused, “He’ll be arrested within the next few days.”
“Why?”
“I spoke to him, and he said that he had to be imprisoned first because he had evidence of a secret that made others want to touch him but do not dare to.”
“And did you ask Luo Pei what the secret was? Did you get the evidence?” Chen SiHan’s voice became excited.
Chu Feng shook his head slowly and said, “Don’t you know how that old fox Luo Pei is? This is his life-saving bargaining chip, so how could he hand it over to me so easily? Moreover, he had long made plans and knew the outcome well in advance, so he let Zhou Zhou come to my place.”
“Surely he is an old fox who knows to send Zhou Zhou to you. He knows very well that even if he doesn’t give you anything, you will still take good care of Zhou Zhou.” Chen SiHan clicked his teeth and said in exasperation.
“We have been looking for evidence for so long, but he has always kept his mouth shut. Even up to this point, he won’t reveal a single thing. A wise man looks after his own hide, he’s very cautious…” Chu Feng sighed.
Chen SiHan looked at him and said, “Fortunately, Zhou Zhou is nothing like him.”
“I’m asking you for help regarding this matter.” Chu Feng sat up straight.
“Tell me.”
“The president just told me that he’s sending me to the border.” Chu Feng narrowed his eyes at the vase of flowers on the coffee table.
“When are you leaving?”
“We’re leaving in a few minutes.”
“At this point, can you not go?”
Chu Feng asked bluntly, “What do you think?”
Chen SiHan was silent for a few seconds then said, “He’s just trying to get you out of the way.”
Chu Feng said, “They will make a move soon, probably tonight. I’m worried about Zhou Zhou’s safety, you have to keep an eye on him for me.”
“Understood. Don’t worry, I’ll leave right away and bring Zhou Zhou to the police station.”
“You can’t take him to the police station,” Chu Feng said. “There are some people inside the police station who I don’t trust. They can’t openly move Zhou Zhou, but we can use other means.”
“Okay, then I’ll bring some trustworthy people to your place.”
Chu Feng hung up the terminal, sat on the sofa for a while, then put on his jacket and left the neighborhood, heading for the supermarket nearest to his home. As he walked out the door of the supermarket, carrying a paper bag full of groceries, his eyes fell on two men not far away.
The two men met his eyes and quickly looked down at the paper in their hands. Chu Feng didn’t look at them again and calmly got into the car with the paper bag in his arms.
After scanning the pass in front of the building, Chu Feng went up to his home. He thought Luo ZhouZhou would be in the living room by now, but he didn’t see anyone after looking around, and the insulated box with breakfast on the dining table hadn’t been opened.
He stood in the middle of the living room and called out, “Zhou Zhou,” but didn’t hear any response.
Chu Feng gently put the paper bag in his arms on the counter, took out the gun at his waist and held it in his hand as he walked toward the bedroom. The bedroom door was only ajar, and opened with a push. He held the gun to the side of his head and looked in through the half-open door.
Only to see that the bed was empty, even the blanket was gone.
He paused, walked slowly to the edge of the bed, and crouched down to look underneath it. Then he put the gun back behind his waist and relaxed his expression.
Luo ZhouZhou was wrapped in the blanket, with Precious’s belly under his head, sleeping soundly under the bed.
Chu Feng called out loudly, “Zhou Zhou, Zhou Zhou.”
Luo ZhouZhou heard the voice and reluctantly opened his eyes, still sleepy as hell.
“Chu Feng, has it been ten minutes yet?” He asked in a slurred voice, just to instantly lose his voice and fall asleep again right after.
“Zhou Zhou, Zhou Zhou.” This time, no matter how much Chu Feng called, he didn’t answer, and even shrank under the blanket, trying to bury himself deeper.
Chu Feng sighed helplessly and took him out with the blanket and put him on the bed. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he gently patted his face and said, “Zhou Zhou, it’s time to get up, don’t sleep, Zhou Zhou.”
He went to bed quite early last night, and now it was almost noon, so him suddenly becoming too sleepy made Chu Feng a little worried. Luo ZhouZhou grunted twice more before opening his eyes and looked at Chu Feng in a trance.
“Chu Feng, is it dawn yet?”
“It’s almost noon.”
Luo ZhouZhou stared at him blankly, and it took a few seconds for him to respond. Sitting up, he asked in panic, “It’s noon? It’s almost noon?”
“Yeah, you slept so long you haven’t even eaten breakfast yet. Get up and clean up, I’ll make you some tomato noodles.”
The look on Luo ZhouZhou’s face changed from panic to despair, and he said with a deflated mouth, “Then I didn’t go to work, Director Qi will scold me to death.”
“It’s fine. Qi Fen said that the institute will be closed for holiday for a few days, so none of you have to go to work.” Chu Feng soothed him calmly.
“There’s a holiday?”
“I called Qi Fen this morning, I was going to ask for a leave of absence for you, but he said the institute is on vacation for the next few days.”
Luo ZhouZhou put his mind at ease, relaxed and was about to fall back down again, but Chu Feng pulled him back with his quick hands and eyes, “Don’t lie down. Eat before you sleep.”
Luo ZhouZhou planted himself forward, following Chu Feng’s hand, buried himself in his arms, rubbed his head against his chest, and lazily said, “I don’t really want to sleep, but I just don’t have any energy, so I fell asleep while lying down.”
“Eat your food first, and after that we’ll move somewhere else.” Chu Feng touched his head.
Luo ZhouZhou tilted his head up and asked, “Move somewhere else?”
Chu Feng thought about it and said, “Zhou Zhou, I have to tell you something.”
“What is it?”
“I might be in a bit of trouble, someone is following me and we’ll have to go live somewhere else for a while.”
“So you’ll be in danger? What kind of trouble?” Luo ZhouZhou asked nervously.
“There’s no danger, and it’s a small issue, but I’m just afraid I’ll get you into trouble, so I’m moving to another place.”
Luo ZhouZhou looked relaxed, “Change to a hotel?”
“No.” Chu Feng answered briefly.
“Then where is it? Is it far?”
Chu Feng mysteriously smiled and said, “A place you’d never expect.”
“Yeah?” Luo ZhouZhou was a little curious.
“Get up and put on your shoes, we’ll go later.”
Luo ZhouZhou bowed his head into Chu Feng’s arms again, and shrugged his nose and sniffed, “You smell really nice.”
Chu Feng looked at him helplessly and had no choice but to bend down and put on his shoes. As he leaned over to put on his shoes, Luo ZhouZhou lay on his shoulders again like he had no bones. After putting on his slippers, Chu Feng lifted him out of bed and said, “Go wait at the table, I’ll make some tomato noodles and we’ll leave after we finish eating.”
Standing in front of the stove, Chu Feng guarded the pot while the noodles cooked and sent messages on his terminal. By the time the messages were sent, the noodles were cooked, giving off the fragrance of tomatoes. He filled a bowl with noodles, layered it with pre-cooked fresh shrimp and sliced beef, and placed a few tender green vegetables and mushrooms on top, and brought it into the dining room.
“Let’s eat.” He put the noodles on the table.
Luo ZhouZhou was already lying on the table, his head resting on one arm, his other hand playing with a salt shaker on top of it.
Chu Feng flexed his fingers and tapped him on the head, urging, “Isn’t tomato noodles your favorite? Eat quickly.”
When they finished eating, Luo ZhouZhou was about to go to pack his clothes, but Chu Feng stopped him and said, “Just take a few things, I’ll bring the rest to you slowly.”
With Precious and the crystal nest with the turtles in it, and with a big bag of clothes, they entered the elevator together. Chu Feng reached out and pressed the number keys, the elevator closed and started, and then stopped again at the next floor.
When the doors opened, there was no one outside.
Chu Feng stepped outside and said to Luo ZhouZhou, “Come on, let’s go see our new home.”
“Huh?”
Luo ZhouZhou was flabbergasted for a few seconds, and then followed him out, his heart full of doubts.
Chu Feng swept open the door of the 12th floor and explained, “This floor is just one level below, bought with someone else’s details, and even the military department doesn’t know it’s my house. It’s very safe”
When he got inside, Luo ZhouZhou found that the furnishing was exactly the same as the one upstairs.
“I like to live in a familiar environment.” Chu Feng saw his confusion, so he explained, “And you don’t have to bother to remember where something is.”
“Except for the crane machine.” Luo ZhouZhou said, pointing to the spot by the living room window.
Chu Feng placed the turtle trophy where the crane machine was supposed to be and the paper bag on the table, walked to the entrance, and pressed the button that would have led to the rooftop.
When the switch was flicked, the ceiling overhead didn’t move away, but a screen appeared on the wall. On the screen was a three-dimensional view of the building, with some green dots moving slowly inside.
“The green dots are the occupants of the building, the white dots are strangers, and if there are red dots, someone is carrying a gun, so don’t go out,” Chu Feng explained. “But don’t be nervous, I modified this room myself, so ordinary people can’t get in at all.”
Seeing Luo ZhouZhou staring intently at the display, having gotten his full attention, Chu Feng took his uniform out of the large paper bag with his clothes in it and went to the bathroom to change.
“This is really interesting.”
After a while, Luo ZhouZhou smilingly turned to look at Chu Feng, saw that he was dressed in his military uniform, and asked, “Are you going out?”
“Zhou Zhou, I’m going to go to the border later,” Chu Feng said.
Luo ZhouZhou asked in dismay, “You’re going to the border?”
“Yes, there was an incident at the border that the President asked me to handle.”
“And how long will you be gone?” Luo ZhouZhou asked in panic and went forward to grab him by the corner of his shirt.
Chu Feng took him into his arms and reassured him, “Not long, just about two days. If everything goes well, I can be back tomorrow.” Seeing Luo ZhouZhou’s face full of reluctance, he added, “I asked SiHan to come and keep you company.”
“Why do I need him to accompany me? I’m not a child.” Luo ZhouZhou said dejectedly.
Chu Feng kissed the top of his hair and said, “Didn’t we talk about this? Someone is following me, and I don’t feel comfortable with you being home alone.”
“Oh, okay.” Luo ZhouZhou said after a few seconds of hesitation.
Chu Feng let go of him, straightened up and said, “Give me your terminal.”
Luo ZhouZhou obediently took off his terminal and handed it to Chu Feng. He watched as he unlocked a drawer with a combination lock, took out a small component, and placed it inside the terminal.
“Here, put it on now.”
Luo ZhouZhou obediently put it back on. As soon as he had put it on, Chu Feng’s terminal started ringing.
“…Okay, I’ll be right down…” he said briefly before hanging up. Looking at the listless Luo ZhouZhou, he whispered, “Zhou Zhou, I’m leaving now. Remember not to go anywhere, just stay at home until I come back.”
Luo ZhouZhou lowered his eyes to the ground and slowly said, “I know.”
Chu Feng turned around, and as soon as he put his hand on the door handle, Luo ZhouZhou suddenly jumped on him, hugged his waist, pressed his face against his back and said, “Then come back quickly.”
Chu Feng turned his face sideways and responded, “Got it.”
Luo ZhouZhou then slowly let go of his hand and watched as Chu Feng opened the door and walked out. He hurriedly ran to the window again and looked down with his face pressed against the one-way glass.
After waiting for a minute, he saw Chu Feng leave the building and hurriedly walk toward the entrance of the neighborhood, where he got into a car parked in front of the gate. Only when the car disappeared at the end of the road did he listlessly withdraw his gaze, walk back into the house, and lie down on the couch.
He turned his head sideways, tracing the outline of the couch cushion with his finger, and quietly sinking deep into his thoughts. He didn’t know how much time passed, but the door clicked and was opened with a soft thud .
Luo ZhouZhou sat up quickly on the couch and called out to Chu Feng, surprised and delighted.
The door was pushed open and a man came in from outside, loudly saying, “Apologies Zhou Zhou, sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not Chu Feng.”
Luo ZhouZhou looked at the sheriff’s uniform, sat down quickly, and greeted him with a sigh, “Hello, Sheriff Chen.”
Chen SiHan carried a large bag and closed the door with his foot before carrying the items in his hands to the dining room and placing them on the table.
“This is dinner.” He put the large bag on his left hand and then the one in his right, “This is tomorrow’s breakfast.” Chen SiHan turned his head and looked at Luo ZhouZhou with hopeful eyes. “Hey, by the way, Zhou Zhou, do you know how to cook? If we could cook, we wouldn’t have to eat takeout.”
Luo ZhouZhou shook his head and apologetically admitted, “I can only eat.”
“That’s okay, it’s just like me, I only eat.” Chen SiHan put his things away, clapped his hands, and walked over to the couch next to Luo ZhouZhou then sat down. He asked, “Do you mind if I work here?”
Luo ZhouZhou shook his head and said, “I don’t mind. Do you mind if I go into the bedroom and lie down?” He felt his body begin to feel weak again.
Chen SiHan said, “I don’t mind.” As he spoke, his eyes went to a certain place and his body froze.
Luo ZhouZhou followed his gaze and saw that it was the two turtles.
“Hey, what’s in that trophy?” Chen SiHan’s voice suddenly rose an octave.
Luo ZhouZhou quickly said, “It’s loaded with Big Crow and Little Crow.”
“What’s big crow and little crow?”
“Two turtles.”
Chen SiHan stretched out his hand, his fingers trembling uncontrollably, “Chu Feng, he’s making a turtle’s nest out of the Chesapeake team’s trophy! He put so much effort into getting it in the first place, and I can’t even get it and now he’s using it as a turtle’s nest?!”
