The Legendary Master’s Wife - Chap 14
Chapter 14: A Long Way to Go
After having asked around, You XiaoMo finally understood what the merit points were all about. One stalk of a level two magic herb was worth five merit points. Cleaning the canteen or Hall of Magic Herbs would earn you twenty points a day. Not a lot, but also not too little. But since not everyone would have the chance to do these housekeeping chores, it was decided on a rotating basis.
The number of Capital Peak disciples was definitely not low. Other than a few wealthy disciples, most of them were of humble origins. So, they were all vying for these few slots, especially for the task of helping the elder disciples guard the medicine gardens. That was because this task was relatively easy, but the number of merit points gained was comparatively more. Therefore, the number of people scrambling over these assignments was not low.
Winning a spot was not guaranteed even if one fought for it. That was because connections were a very important factor. If a connected person recommended someone, then the probability of success was about eighty percent. Without connections, one could not even dream of being chosen , even just appearing in front of the elder disciples was a problem.
Thinking through this critical point, You XiaoMo now understood why some people were so eager to butter up to the other disciples. Be that as it may, You XiaoMo didn’t just go ahead and start to butter up to his superiors. He was not so egoistic to think that the seniors would take a liking to him if he went up to rub shoulders with them eagerly. As for Fang ChenYue, it never even crossed his mind. Even though they had spoken a few times, who knew what kind of person the Da Shixiong was.
If by chance he found it distasteful, then it would not be worth it. But luckily, a level two mage was still a long way for him. You XiaoMo decided to go with the flow and not worry about this problem for now. Casting aside that vexing problem, his whole person suddenly felt much lighter. It just happened to be lunch time, so You XiaoMo followed the others to the canteen.
The three people walking in front of him were older than him, so they could be considered as his Shixiongs. These three people were swarming around Zha o- shixiong. Zhao-shixiong and Da Shixiong were both Kong-shifu’s disciples. Zhao-shixiong was disciple number five, a level two mage. But, it was said that he was on the verge of breaking through to level three. Compared to them, he was more of a senior and more knowledgeable. In order to ensure a better future in Capital Peak, a few disciples would go up to him from time to time to gather some information. Of course, they were very respectful.
“Zhao-shixiong, we have just been here a few days , and are still clueless over a lot of things. Would you be kind enough to tell us a thing or two?”
“What would you like to know? ” Seemed like they might have succeeded, Zhao-shixiong seemed quite pleased.
“We’d like to know how the competition is for the task of taking care of the medicine gardens.” One of them asked cautiously.
Zhao-shixiong huffed out a breath, saying, “Don’t even think about it. There are not many medicine gardens in Capital Peak. Even by taking turns it would never reach you. If the Elders needed someone, they would look for their own disciples. As for the medicine gardens of the Shifu, Da Shixiong, and Second Shixiong, all already have fixed guardians.”
This was a disappointment but not unexpected. They w ere, after all, newly minted probationary disciples. Plump assignments were not something they could expect.
“Zhao-shixiong, you just said that Da Shixiong and Second Shixiong have their own medicine gardens. Don’t tell me they are already level four mages?”
It was common knowledge that only level four mages and up were allowed to have their own medicine gardens. This point was already covered by Da Shixiong yesterday.
“Or course. Da Shixiong and Second Shixiong have outstanding talent. Early last year they became level four mages. They can be considered the most outstanding disciples in Capital Peak.” Saying this, he glanced at their anxious faces. Laughing, he added, “There’s no need to lose heart. Although the highest for all of you in this lifetime is level three, if you’re willing to work hard, you may also achieve success in this field.” With this, a look of superiority surfaced on his face. Because his aura was blue, although words of consolation fell from his lips, there was not a shred of sympathy in his eyes.
The three of them looked at each other in dismay, smiling wryly. Indeed, their inborn talent had already dictated that they could only be low level mages. Level four was only something they could look up at from below, nothing more.
When they entered the canteen, You XiaoMo was still rooted at the same spot staring blankly. After a long time, he started to feel a little ashamed. Just a while ago he was rejoicing that he did not need to worry about level two at this time. This was while the other disciples were already planning so far into the future. Indeed, if one were to start looking for chores now, saving up the merit points bit by bit, these could then be used once level two was reached. He actually hadn’t thought of that. Thinking like this, You XiaoMo suddenly felt that he had a long way to go.
After lunch, You XiaoMo spent the whole afternoon completing the assignment given by Da Shixiong. That was to consolidate the force of his soul, to learn the good and bad magical properties of various magic herbs, and so on. This was for them to build a strong foundation to avoid complications while refining magic pills. Only when the sun was almost setting did You XiaoMo return to his room.
Wanting to take a bath, You XiaoMo suddenly remembered the Capital Peak rule that left him speechless. He never knew that Capital Peak was so poor that even water was restricted. He only found out yesterday that each disciple could only take one bath every three days. T here were those that took only one every ten days or every half a month, but for You XiaoMo, whose body started to itch if he missed one day, this was pure torture. There was that place connected to the blue teardrop and even though it was unclear what that dimension was, it just so happened to have a lake.
