Chapter 39: Lecture at the Skylark Hall

The next day, You XiaoMo headed to the Skylark Hall which was where a few high level mages would give lectures about once a month. This month was Kong Wen’s turn. Yesterday, before leaving, Da Shixiong told him about this, stressing that he had to go no matter what he had going on.

The day before, Kong Wen had accepted him as a disciple , but the people who knew this were few. So Kong Wen planned to make use of this occasion to introduce You XiaoMo to Capital Peak using his lecture , since they were always a packed affair, gathering many more times the usual number of people.

In order not to be late, You XiaoMo set out ahead of time. He had to frequently ask around for information , since this was his first time going to Skylark Hall. Due to the fact that he was unlike the other disciples, until now he actually had no idea that Capital Peak had a Skylark Hall. So , by the time he arrived at the Skylark Hall, all the seagrass floor cushions seemed to be already occupied. A dense mass of heads was seen and because it was not yet time, everyone was busy chatting. All the whispers added together made it seem like a vegetable market.

You XiaoMo stood at the entrance and looked inside, trying to look for Da Shixiong. Instead he saw someone right at the front stand up, turn around, and wave to him.

“Xiao Shidi, over here!”

The person waving at him was Fang ChenYue. He had been waiting for this Xiao Shidi for a long time. He coincidentally caught sight of this Xiao Shidi craning his neck looking all over with knitted brows and an anxious face. He couldn’t help find ing it amusing. Knowing that it was his first time here and that he probably didn’t know how to make heads or tails out of anything, he decided to call out to him. However, all of Skylark Hall quieted down at the sound of Fang ChenYue’s voice.

Rows of heads turned around at once, immediately catching sight of You XiaoMo standing at the door. Quite a few people immediately recognized him, some even to the extent of exclaiming out loud.

” Yi , isn’t he the one who ate together with the Warrior Division’s Lin Xiao at the canteen? Why is he also so familiar with Fang-shixiong?”

You XiaoMo felt the burning stares from all sides, only able to quicken his pace towards Fang ChenYue. The whispering started up again except that it was louder than before. Since Fang ChenYue had told the few disciples who knew not to reveal that You XiaoMo had been accepted as Kong Wen’s disciple, most people still did not know about this. Otherwise, it would be even more shocking.

Fang ChenYue had already guessed that he would not be able to find a seat, so he reserved one for him beforehand. Walking over, You XiaoMo saw an empty seat next to Fang ChenYue. In the same row the other four disciples were seated around him.

After thanking Da Shixiong, and greeting the other disciples, You XiaoMo put on a blank face and sat down. He suddenly realized that although he had always wanted to keep a low profile, the people he knew always made him appear in a high profile way in front of everybody, leaving a n image in everyone’s mind. He really didn’t know if it was a good thing or a bad thing!

Kong Wen finally arrived several minutes later , dressed in the usual simple blue robe with a white jade hairpin on his head. While this was definitely not particularly eye-catching, he still radiated the imposing manner of a superior man. Most people would feel the urge to lower their head upon seeing him. Following his arrival, Skylark Hall quieted down, it was so silent that the sound of a needle falling on the floor would be heard.

He didn’t launch straight into the lecture as he usually did, instead he started by introducing someone to everyone. This person was the one that had just been deeply scrutinized by everyone, You XiaoMo. Once they heard that he had been accepted as the seventh disciple of Kong Wen, all the disciples seated on the seagrass floor cushions erupted loudly in gasps.

“Kong-shifu actually accepted a disciple, when did this happen?”

“This You XiaoMo is really something. A few days before, he became the talk of the town with the Warrior Division Lin Xiao. And in just a few days, he actually succeeded in becoming Kong-shifu’s disciple. This really is too much!”

“Really, what is his background? Why do all the big shots in the Tian Xin Sect want to associate with him?”

“I heard that his inborn talent is nothing to shout about. Why would Kong-shifu accept him as a disciple?”

“Can it be that this is what they call nepotism?”

Many people started questioning the decision one after another. A few days ago, when he got involved with Lin Xiao, some people already started to investigate him , and as a result they found out that his inborn talent was nothing much. Not too long ago , at the Hall of Mages , he definitely wasn’t selected by Heaven Peak or Flying Peak. In the end, he was accepted into Capital Peak by Kong-shifu, but Kong-shifu did not make him his disciple immediately . If his talent were that good, Kong-shifu would have definitely accepted him on the spot, but he did not. Now when they heard this news, most of them would think of his good relationship with Lin Xiao.

Although the Mage Division was essential to the Tian Xin Sect, the Warrior Division was also something it couldn’t do without , since they were able to become the number one sect because of its Warrior Division. If one wanted to describe the role of the Mage Division, then one could say that it played more of a management role.

Lin Xiao, who was the number one among the younger generation in the Warrior Division, had a high chance of becoming the next Grand Master. So, if Kong-shifu were to say some nice things about You XiaoMo, it was possible that he may gain some favors.

“Silence!” Kong Wen said calmly. Everyone immediately sealed their mouths , leaving only the sound of heavy breathing throughout Skylark Hall. It was obvious that everyone was worked up over this, maybe even furious that You XiaoMo succeeded in becoming Kong Wen’s disciple. A mixture of admiring, jealous, and hateful glares once again fell on You XiaoMo, and not for the first time.

You XiaoMo could only pull his head in . Seeing his tortoise-like behavior, Fang ChenYue , who was sitting next to him , could only find it very funny. This Xiao Shidi was always giving him an uncommon ‘pleasant surprise’.

Everyone had thought that Kong Wen would say something about this matter , but he did not. Instead , he acted as if he didn’t hear anything, carrying on as if nothing happened.

The main topic he wanted to cover was his insights on refining magic pills. With him being a high level mage, his experience refining magic pills was rich and valuable. If one were to miss it, one couldn’t even think of hearing it a second time , because he would not talk about this topic again.

Even though You XiaoMo was hopelessly uncomfortable, he soon became captivated . Although Kong Wen was talking about mid-level magic pills, not something that he could engage in for the moment, he still could listen and prepare beforehand. The lecture lasted for an hour, and You XiaoMo looked on with a face that showed he didn’t want it to end. Right up to the point Kong Wen declared the lecture was over, You XiaoMo was still transfixed. As a result, Fang ChenYue had to call him back to his senses.

“Xiao Shidi, how long do you intend to continue sitting there?”

“Ah?” You XiaoMo suddenly woke up. He saw Da Shixiong looking at him with a teasing smile, and soon realized that both of them were the only ones left in Skylark Hall. He immediately scrambled to stand up awkwardly.

Fang ChenYue didn’t continue teasing him. Instead he asked kindheartedly if he understood what Shifu was talking about. And if he didn’t, then he could always look for him anytime.

You XiaoMo thanked him , and they parted ways upon leaving Skylark Hall. When he returned to his room, he found that there was someone he didn’t recognize standing by the door. That person seemed to be waiting for him. His expression was coldly indifferent, it could be just his nature or it could be due to something else. Upon seeing him, he asked immediately without any words of greeting.

“Are you You XiaoMo?”
